Pledge by NCX
Democratize access to forest carbon markets and deliver climate action at scale
Supporting actions: Sustainable Forestry, Data and Technological Tools, Science and Technical Assistance, Conservation Finance,
NCX pledges to advance the measurement and monitoring of every acre of forest in the United States and to incentivize hundreds of thousands of forest owners across 200 million acres to capture more carbon in their forests by democratizing access to improved forest management and afforestation/reforestation carbon finance.
NCX’s Basemap, the first high-resolution map of every forested acre in the U.S., measures every acre, every year down to the individual tree and species level. With Basemap as the foundation, they created the Natural Capital Exchange. The leading data-driven forest carbon marketplace coordinates landowner behavior change at scale by enabling the smallest and largest landowners to participate in forest carbon markets, ensuring that this participation results in real, immediate, scalable, and efficient climate impact. Currently, NCX incentivizes landowners to extend forest rotations, keeping forests as forests and growing larger, more carbon-rich trees. Thanks to the Natural Capital Exchange, about 200 million acres of forest and thousands of small landowners will have access to forest carbon dollars, sequestering millions of tons of CO2.
Through our involvement with 1t.org’s U.S. Chapter, we pledge to work with other 1t.org members to expand NCX and support additional sustainable forest management, and afforestation/reforestation efforts across the U.S. We also pledge to work with partners to advance metrics that support investment in the other critical values forests provide beyond timber and carbon.

Data and technological tools: By improving Basemap and our ability to measure, report, and support transactions on forest values beyond timber, NCX can directly support the aims and ambitions of companies looking to sequester more carbon, non-profits aiming to advance nature-based solutions and afforestation/reforestation efforts for biodiversity and climate, among other potential impacts.
Science and technical assistance: NCX’s work is grounded in science and data. We pledge to convene other scientists, practitioners, and other experts in advancing our understanding of forests through innovative data, computer modeling and statistical approaches. For example, we are already working with university partners to advance biodiversity metrics measurement and monitoring.
Conservation finance: NCX connects private capital (corporate carbon credit buyers, for example) looking to change outcomes in forests to the landowners who have control over those outcomes. NCX ensures that year over year, those changes manifest on the landscape by paying landowners for outcomes versus practices.
Ecologically appropriate and climate informed forestry – Through our data and the market-based incentives NCX enables landowners to be paid to balance multiple outcomes on the landscape. We aim to advance programs that encourage landowners to adopt or support ecologically appropriate and climate informed practices.
Long-term stewardship and capacity – We will ensure that year over year, we’re providing incentives for forest owners to advance sustainable outcomes that align with the 1t.org values and respect the goals and aims of landowners.
Community engagement to ensure benefits to all stakeholders – We will engage with local governments, NGOs, private landowners, and others at various stages of the development and improvement of NCX to ensure that our program supports the ultimate outcomes of more sustainable forest management and climate impact.
